TITRE

Interacting carbon nanosystems : Few Layer Graphene and coupled carbon nanotubes.

RESUME

Single-wall carbon nanotubes and few layer graphene systems have been
extensively studied during the last years, both as a fantastic
playground for nanoscientists and for their potential applications in
nanoelectronics. In this presentation, I will focus on the effect of the
interaction between nanotubes (to form bundles) and between graphene
sheets (to form Few Layer Graphene or Graphite) on the electronic and
the vibrational properties of the systems. The experimental fingerprints
(Raman Spectroscopy and STM) of the interaction effects will be
discussed.

For Few Layer Graphite, after a broad introduction, I'll describe the
influence of the stacking order of the graphene layers on the electronic
properties. In particular, we have shown that electronic and transport
properties depends on the stacking order and that the massless Fermion
behaviour, typical of single layered graphene, remains in incommensurate
multilayered graphitic systems. We will focus on STM and Raman
fingerprints. Further Details can be found in [1] and [2]

I then turn to carbon nanotubes and comment recent experimental data
that illustrate, first, a degeneracy lifting of the electronic levels in
a bundle of identical zig-zag nanotubes and, second, the existence of a
strong energy transfer mediated by a mechanical coupling between two
touching nanotubes [3]. We will present simulations supporting those
results.
