Résumé: "Among a number of fundamental issues, the origin of inertial mass remains one of the major open problems in particle physics. Furthermore, topological effects related to non perturbative field configurations are poorly understood in those gauge theories of direct relevance to our physical universe. Motivated by such issues, this Thesis provides a deeper understanding for the appearance of topological effects in abelian gauge field theories, also in relation to the existence of a mass gap for the gauge interactions. These effects are not accounted for when proceeding through gauge fixings as is customary in the literature.

The original Topological-Physical factorisation put forth in this work enables to properly identify in topologically massive gauge theories (TMGT) a topological sector which appears under formal limits within the Lagrangian formulation. Our factorisation then allows for a straightforward quantisation of TMGT, accounting for all the topological features inherent to such dynamics. Moreover dual actions are constructed while preserving the gauge symmetry also in the presence of dielectric couplings. All the celebrated mass generation mechanisms preserving the gauge symmetry are then recovered but now find their rightful place through a network of dualities, modulo the presence of topological terms generating topological effects. In particular a dual formulation of the famous Nielsen-Olesen vortices is constructed from TMGT. Within a novel physically equivalent picture, these topological defects are interpreted as dielectric monopoles."

« Studies of Diffractive Scattering of Photons at Large Momentum Transfer And of the VFPS Detector at HERA â»

Résumé:
In this thesis, two studies of the diffractive phenomena in the electron proton collisions with the H1 detector at HERA are presented. The first is the study of the inclusive elastic diffractive events in the regime of high photon virtuality, with the scattered proton detected by the Very Forward Proton Spectrometer (VFPS). The VFPS detector, designed to measure diffractive scattered protons with high acceptance, has been installed in 2004 to benefit from the HERA II luminosity increase. The selected event sample of an integrated luminosity of 130.2 pb-1 was collected in years 2006-2007. Data sample distributions are compared to the prediction based on the diffractive parton distribution functions, as extracted from the H1 measurement of the diffractive structure function F2D(3) at HERA I. After the study of the VFPS efficiency, the VFPS acceptance as a function of the xpom variable is estimated and studied in relation to the forward proton beam optics.
The second study leads to the cross section measurement of the diffractive scattering of quasi-real photons off protons, with the large momentum transfer, |t|. The final state photon is separated from the proton dissociation system, Y, by a large rapidity gap and has a large transverse momentum, p_T > 2 GeV. Large p_T imply the presence of the hard scale t (|t| ~ p_T^2) and allows predictions of the perturbative QCD to be applied. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity 46.2 pb-1 of data collected in the 1999-2000 running period. Cross sections as a function of the incident photon-proton centre of mass energy, W, and |t| are measured in the range Q^2 < 0.01 GeV^2, 175 < W < 247 GeV, 4 < |t| < 36 GeV^2 and ypom < 0.05. The cross section measurements have been compared to predictions of LLA BFKL calculations.

"Measurements of photon induced processes in CMS and forward proton 
detection at the LHC"

Résumé:
High energy photon induced processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider 
(LHC) constitutes a unique testing ground for physics within and beyond 
the Standard Model of Elementary Particles. Colliding protons can interact 
by the exchange of one or two high energy photons, leading to very clean 
final state topologies. Several issues related to the study of photon 
interactions at the LHC are addressed in this Thesis. The detection of 
forward scattered protons, after the photon exchange, requires near-beam 
detectors. Developments of edgeless sensor prototypes have been realised 
as possible solutions for such an application. A proper design of these 
detectors has required developing a dedicated simulator (Hector) for the 
transport of charged particles particles in beamlines. Finally, the 
analyses of detection in the CMS experiment of the photon-induced 
exclusive production of lepton pairs are presented. In view of application 
early from the LHC start-up, in particular for the absolute luminosity 
measurement ­ the fundamental parameter of the LHC.

"At the dawn of the Large Hadron Collider era, the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism remains the most appealing theoretical explanation of the electroweak symmetry breaking, despite the fact that the associated fundamental scalar boson has escaped any direct detection attempt. In this thesis, we consider a particular extension of the minimal Brout-Englert-Higgs scalar sector implemented in the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions. This extension, which is a specific, "twisted", realisation of the generic two-Higgs-doublet model, is motivated by a relative phase in the definition of the phenomenologically successful CP and custodial symmetries. Considering extensively various theoretical, indirect and direct constraints, this model appears as a viable alternative to more conventional scenarios like supersymmetric models, and gives grounds to largely unexplored possibilities of exotic scalar signatures at present and future collider experiments."
